LO3 Legal and Ethical

Legal
In the animation industry there are lots of legal issues that can arise from animation production, the most important one to avoid is intellectual property infringement as in the animation industry intellectual property is everything to studios. Another legal issue to avoid is Defamation of character, this is especially hard for animations such as south park and family guy as they use some strong and colourful language that might offend people. This defamation can be excused if what was said turns out to be the truth and is an honest opinion.

Ethical
There are not as many ethical issues as legal issues however they are equally as important as they directly relate to the target audience. One ethical issue would be non-disclosure, this is a very important ethical requirement from most big name animation studios as it directly affects the IP of a product. Another ethical issue is image content as it is a blurry issue. Image content is when materials "looks like" other peoples materials so there are clashes. Censorship is also a large ethical issue as it affects the audience in a big way, censorship is the condemnation of selected content in a piece of media, in the animation industry it often occurs when an animation is at risk of breaching defamation of character by insulting, offending or discriminating.

LO3 Target Audience

The target audience for my animation will be people aged 15-25, either gender, any ethnicity and of a A,B,C1 demographic. Fans of TV animated series's such as family guy and American dad.

LO2 Charater idea and concepts

The idea for my animated characters stems from the idea that simplicity is always key. Keeping this in mind I decided that maybe a very simple animation might turn out better than a complex animation. This is why my characters are very simple in design and I have limited the amount of facial expressions to three.

LO1 Task 2 Short Report

Ghibli,  Pixar, Fuzzy Door productions, Aardman, Nickelodeon Animation Studios.

In this report I will compare five different animation companies. Studio Ghibli, Pixar, Fuzzy Door Productions, Aardman and Nickelodeon Animation studios.

Studio Ghibli
Studio Ghibli is a Japanese  animation studio first founded in 1985 and is famed for creating films such as spirited away and my neighbor Totoro. Ghibli use an original animation style called cell drawing. This is similar for most animation companies like studio Ghibli as the majority of there animation is 2D. However there animation technique is unique from the other 2D animations from Nickelodeon or Fuzzy Door Productions as Studio Ghibli still draws every single slide of animation in the cell style while the others have upgraded to a newer computer generated 2D animation. The target audience for Ghibli films is very vast as there animations story's cater to any generation.  The age range is for everybody as the films are rated PG but this means that the younger viewers may need parental guidance. These viewers are of any ethnicity and gender.

Pixar Studios
Pixar is an animation studio based in California, USA. They have been running since 1986 when they became a spin off from Lucas Film. Pixar have had a huge impact on the animation industry. They have produced box office hits as the Toy Story franchise and WALL-E. Unlike Ghibli, Pixar have a very large budget which means they can venture from the standard cell drawing style to computer generated 3D animation that requires a lot more time and money to create. Pixar does mostly films as they spend a lot on production so they need to make box office money to stay a float. As pixars budget is so large they dont bother with doing cell or 2D animation, they focus on very detailed 3D animation. This is different to any of the other studios in this report as they are mostly 2D with the exception of Aardman. The reason why Pixar do 3D animation and the other don't boils down to the simple fact that Pixar have a lot more money. The target audience for Pixar is very similar to studio ghibli, nickelodeon and Aardman as they all have PG rated films. However Pixars films seem to be more catered to the western community of the world, where as Ghibli studios are aimed towards any region of the world.

Fuzzy Door Productions
Fuzzy Door Productions are a animation studio founded by Seth McFarlane in 1996. Fuzzy Door Productions have created many of televisions comedy animations, such as Family Guy and American Dad. These animations use computer generated 2D animation. This animation style is the same as a lot of Nickelodeons animations for example spongebob and family guy are very similar in terms of animation technique. Fuzzy door Productions do a similar style of animation to Nickelodeon as it is both computer generated and 2D, however the difference between the two is that the Fuzzy Door Productions animation uses more frames per interaction making it possible for them to animate their characters more allows for a better range of movements. The target audience for Fuzzy Door Productions animations is a lot different to those of Pixar, Nickelodeon, Aardman and Studio Ghibli. The target audience is for ages 18 and above as there animations are R rated. Due to the various forms of offensive content in their animations the target audience is aimed toward the western hemisphere.

Aardman Studios
Aardman studios are a animation studio based in Bristol, Uk. Aardman specialise in a unique animation style called Claymation, this is where characters made out of clay are moved very slightly every frame to create movement.  This technique is very similar to stop motion animation. Aardman has created popular works such as Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the sheep and Chicken run. Aardman's animation work is very different to the other studios due to there unique animation technique. Aardman is most likely the uniquest out of the five animation companies in this report as there animation style is both unparrelled and so far fetched that the larger american studios wont even consider it. Aardmans claymation has come to become quite a beloved style of animation due to the productions of the Wallace & Gromit films. The target audience for Aardman varies due to the PG ratings on their films, however the younger ages must watch with parental guidence. The animations are also aimed toward any ethnicity and gender.

Nickelodeon Studios
Nickelodeon animation studios are an animation studio, based in Burbank, California and owned by the television channel Nickelodeon. They were founded in 1998.  Most of there animation work is for the Nicklodeon channel, but occasionally they will produce for Nicktoons. This is different to the other studios I have looked at as it shows an animation studio that makes animations for in house purposes. Most of there animation is in a 2D style. This is similar to Fuzzy Door Productions as it looks very similar but as mentioned above Nickelodeon has limited movement in the characters meaning they used less frames to create each movement thus spending less money on the animation. The target audience for nickelodeons animations is for ages 4-15 as most of the television programs are aimed at children. These television shows are aimed at the western hemisphere similarly to Pixars target audience, this is because a lot of the humor used in these children's programs may not be as funny on the other side of the world.
